WHAT IS LOCAL?
Thank you for visiting Local AdBook’s website, maglocal.com. Local is a beautifully designed magazine that is mailed direct to the mailbox. Delivery is guaranteed by the United States Post Office and it is distributed to select residential properties.

Our goal is to motivate homeowners into keeping this book around the house for a while which is why you’ll never see an advertiser on our cover. Instead, you’ll always find the talented work of one of our local photographers. We try to build ads that tell a story about a business and allow you to get to know them before you ever step foot inside their cafe, boutique, restaurant or furniture shop. If you’re looking for a great contractor, Local has built up an impressive collection of home professionals who can assist you with your next project.

We love introducing Palm Beach County to great businesses that they’re not familiar with. Local believes in small business and we firmly believe in the power of print…when it’s done right. We love feedback and we invite you, our readers, to let us know what you like and don’t like. We hope, with your help, to keep the content relevant, useful and entertaining because we’d like our little book to be a welcomed addition to your coffee table.

WHO IS LOCAL?

Palm Beach County, you are in for a treat. Two of the most talented people I know have relocated here from central New Jersey to combine their talents and publish this new magazine. But who are these two mysterious guys? What do they know about putting out a magazine? What could ever possess them to leave NJ and their friends and families behind? In short, do they really know what they are doing?

Permit me to first introduce myself. My name is Denise McDermott and I am here to provide the answers to all of your burning questions about Charles McCurdy and Seth Kanarick, the new publishers of Local Adbook. Why me? To begin with, we have all worked together for the past several years at Hometown Quarterly (HQ), a gorgeous upscale magazine distributed for over 20 years to over 90,000 readers in central New Jersey. Charles was the artistic director, Seth was the head of sales and I was editor. But, our work roles were only half of the story.Over the course of pressurized deadlines, sales quotas and creative challenges, we truly came to rely on and appreciate each other. In short, we became great friends. And who better than a friend to give you the inside scoop on my pals Charles and Seth?

I began work in the HQ offices only a few weeks after the shattering events of September 11. It was my first time back at full time employment since the birth of my three children. It was a small operation back in those days and Charles and I made up the entire office “staff”. Charles greeted me that first morning with a warm smile and sincere words of welcome that put me immediately at ease. Looking back at that initial meeting and the 12 subsequent years we have worked together, it is so easy to understand why clients adored working with him. As the company grew and we took on more staff, the number one concern the majority of our clients expressed to me was that they would no longer have Charles working directly on their ads. They clamored for his creative and marketing suggestions and truly respected his professionalism and empathy. There was just never enough Charles to go around!

I was “in” on Charles’ surprise marriage proposal plan to his wonderful wife Kelly, and was thrilled to attend their small intimate wedding ceremony performed on a bridge in Central Park. Kelly transformed Chuck into a seasoned traveler, and they have visited many exciting locations over the years. At one point they even wrote a joint travel column for HQ. The birth of their daughter Emma in 2011 has not put a crimp in those travel plans. Already the McCurdy threesome has visited Prague, Barbados and Germany.

Charles has never met a food in the U.S. or abroad that he has not liked. I have actually seen him get a tear in his eye over the prospect of a meatball pannini at our favorite Italian place or black pepper prawns at our favorite Chinese spot. I am hoping he gets some new teams to root for in Florida, as he is currently at NY Mets and NY Jets fan….the poor guy. Charles and Kelly think that they are perfectly suited for Florida, and I’ve heard that Grandma and Grandpa McCurdy are soon to follow them down.

What can I say about Seth? The number one concern the majority of our clients expressed to me was that they WOULD HAVE Seth working directly on their accounts. Sorry Seth, couldn’t resist.Actually, I know Seth would appreciate my humor, as he is one of the funniest guys around. I guess you need a good sense of humor when you are the “sales guy”; there is after all a measure of rejection in that role. Not that Seth ever let that get him down.

Seth was the life of the office, always in a good mood and ready with a joke, a funny video. a new phone app, or a restaurant recommendation. At one deadline when we were putting in our usual post midnight hours, he brought his spit rotisserie into the office and roasted us all a juicy chicken to snack on, complete with “sides”.His tomato sauce with meatballs, sausage (and pepperoni!) is perfection. One of my funniest memories of Seth? The time he persuaded me to join a “fitness boot camp” with him. After a few grueling sessions we were thrilled to find out that the exercise for a particular day was going to be one minute sessions on the stationery bike, with rest time in between sessions no less! Catch your breath time and an exercise where you can sit – what could be better we enthused? Fifteen minutes later we were both green in the parking lot, too nauseous to even laugh at our inaccurate assessment of the exercise routine, until a day later.

Seth definitely has the sense of humor that he may need, but he also always had an amazing relationship with his accounts because he looked out for them and made sure they were getting the absolute best efforts that our company could give them.He is actually joining his parents and brother and family in this area and I bet the family is thrilled to welcome Seth, his lovely wife Margaret, and their “babies” ,chihuahuas Toga and Minnie, to Florida.

It was a sad day in many respects when we printed our last HQ Magazine earlier this year. The owner of HQ decided to go in a different direction with a variety of other services centered on the web and our little magazine family was no more. But Charles and Seth still believe in the power of print, especially when it is in the form of a gorgeous magazine that “speaks” to the local area. They are bringing their talent, their personalities and their experience to LOCAL .New Jersey’s loss is definitely Florida’s gain.Get to know them and get to know LOCAL, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
